Daily Non-Negotiable

6/22/2021

I have learned over the past few years that stress in life will always come and go. When stress is triggered, it is more difficult to stick to a daily schedule. Things like exercise, eating habits, hobbies, and ways of coping change when life gets tough.

While I know life is not always perfect, and there will be times when you are out of your routine, I want to challenge you to answer this question. What is your daily non-negotiable? What is that one thing you need to do each day without question?

I have used this practice time and time again with my clients. We found success when non-negotiables were identified; I wondered why I wasn’t practicing the same thing in my life?! My current non-negotiable is drinking my water. It may seem like a small to do, but I feel better when I’m drinking my water. Some other examples are:

-Exercising
-Going for a walk
-Prayer
-Meditation
-Calling a friend or family member
-7-8 hours of sleep
-Reading
-Eating 3 meals a day
-Eating a specific kind of food
-Drinking tea or coffee
-No alcohol
-Dinner with partner/family
-Being done with work by a specific time

Even if it is just one thing every day that is the same, staying consistent with it will help keep you grounded amidst the chaos. Life will throw you unexpected curveballs that you cannot control. However, there is peace in knowing you can control this one part of your day.
